Abstract

This empirical study examines the socioeconomic effects of the 2023 fuel subsidy removal in Nigeria on the standard of living of civil servants and traders in Anambra State. Drawing on survey data, secondary literature, and contextual economic indicators, we assess how fuel price deregulation has influenced transportation costs, household expenditures, purchasing power, inflation, and welfare outcomes. Findings reveal that subsidy removal has significantly increased the cost of living, eroded real incomes of low- and middle-income earners, and negatively affected business operations and welfare for both civil servants and traders. Policy recommendations emphasize targeted social protection measures, wage adjustments, and strategic cushioning programs.
